I still haven't watched a full baseball game yet, but I'm already itching to get back into hockey.
After coming to an agreement allowing NHL players to participate in the upcoming winter Olympics (YES!), the 2013-2014 schedule has been released.
Here are my top 10 games that I will either be attending or glued to the TV for:
#10 December 10, 2013 @ Calgary Flames
This could be the only time you ever see me put the Flames in a "top 10" games to watch. This will be Jarome Iginla's first game back to Calgary since being traded last season. Do you guys remember that? It was one of those moves that no one really talked about, nor did it ever come up in the playoffs. Especially not the Eastern Conference finals. It'll be pretty cool to see the fans react to Iginla and I expect him to be amped up to perform.
#9 November 14, 2013 vs Columbus Blue Jackets
Flames...and now the Blue Jackets?!? I promise I'm not high. This will be Nathan Horton's return to the garden. While I wish there was a way to keep him, he clearly desired a market significantly more lax than Boston. Well, Nathan, you found it. Still think he'll get a good ovation.
#8 November 5, 2013 vs Dallas Stars
The big trade for the B's this offseason was obviously unloading Plexiglass Peverley and Party Boy Seguin to the Stars in order to increase our Swedishness (Loui Eriksson). I'll discuss more about the trade in a later post, but it should be interesting to see this game. I'd assume Seguin will want to show the B's that they gave up on him a little too soon.

Finals rematch. They have a new but familar coach in ex-Rangers head
coach Tortarella, but mostly the same key players on the team. Oh man,
this is going to be a good one, just for the fact I love our fans and
they will never let this team forget what happened in 2011.
#6 November 29, 2013 vs New York Rangers
Besides last year, the B's have always had a home matinee game on Black Friday and I LOVE IT. Just like they did in 2011, the NHL has decided to piggy-back off of this and air the game on NBC. I personally think this is a great time to try and get an annual national game. NFL has Thanksgiving day, and you can't compete with college football and NFL on the weekends. I'll be recovering from turkey and beer on the couch watching this game!
#5 October 5, 2013 vs Detroit Red Wings
Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you one of our newest members to the Atlantic Division (yes we are now the Atlantic Division, while the old Atlantic division is now the Metropolitan Division). We add another original 6 team into the fold and our second game of the season is the first time we'll play them as division rivals. My Swedish crush, Daniel Alfredsson, also spurned us for the Wings. Just a little added fuel to the fire. Welcome East, Wings. Did I mention this is a Saturday NIGHT game?? Get your drank on fans.
#4 November 9, 2013 vs Toronto Maple Leafs
Remember the feeling you had back on May 13th when you thought the hockey season for Boston was ending? Then the beyond excitement feeling knowing you just completely ruined Toronto fans spring? I do and I'm sure the Leafs do too. This should be a very intense match up as the two teams play each other for the first time since Game 7 of the first round. If Loui Eriksson scores, can we still chant "Thank You, Kessel"?
#3 October 30, 2013 @ Pittsburgh Penguins
The Bruins will have March 27th circled on their calendars (see #1), but I can guarantee you the Penguins will have 10/30 circled on theirs. That is the date the B's will travel to Pittsburgh in an Eastern Conference Finals rematch. Remember that one? The series in which the Penguins were suppose to just man handle us offensively? Oh yeah..the B's completely embarrassed the team and the two best players in the world by SWEEPING them. #BoomThatHappened
#2 Any game vs Montreal Canadiens
Best rivalry in all of sports. I'll take on anyone in this argument. These games never ever lack drama or emotion. They will be a more skilled team with the addition of Danny Briere and they will definitely be a tougher team with the addition of George "Best Mustache in Sports" Parros. I guarantee a Thornton vs Parros bout in the first period of the first game against these two teams. Both teams will be competing for the division title again. Sad the B's handed it over to the Habs late last season.
#1 March 27, 2014 vs Chicago Blackhawks
Normally the #1 spot is reserved for the Candiens, and while the 4 games against the Habs would take #2-#5, I have to give the Cup Finals rematch the #1 spot. I'll just say that again, Stanley...Cup...Finals...rematch. Less than 2 minutes away from forcing Game 7. I expect the B's and the crowd to be on a different planet with intensity. I don't even know if that statement makes sense, but it does to me.

GOLDEN POINTS: Boston Bruins vs Montreal Canadiens
Bruins 2 - Habs 1

While we didn't get the pleasure of listening to Jack and Brick call the first B's/Habs game of the year, I actually thought NBC Sports did a nice job on the whole "Rivalry Wednesday" theme. If you tuned in at 7ish you got treated to some video montages of the rivalry through the decades and some sound bites taken from interviews with old players. If you don't like two teams that hate each other, then it wasn't for you. But for me, good stuff!
Every season divisional games obviously mean more than others. You win the division, you are a top 3 seed. In a shorten season they mean even more. It's still early in the year, but the B's had a chance to either put 3 points between them and the Habs (and remain on top of the East) or allow the Habs to leap frog them to the top of the division. The Habs are playing well this year, combined with the fact that it's never easy going to the Bell Centre (like the little Canadian flip of the "e" and the "r"...I'm so cultured), I wasn't too sure if the B's would pull off the double U.
Then the game started and I REALLY didn't think the B's were going to get a shot on goal, let alone a victory. They played just awful hockey in that first period. Luckily we have a good goaltender or it would've been a long night. It was also a surprisingly uneventful game in terms of fisticuffs/face washes/scrums. Not necessarily a bad thing, for while it was a fairly clean it was still entertaining. Maybe the B's are waiting for them to come to the Garden to rattle their cages a bit.
Anyhoo...
- TUUUuuuUUUUUUKKKAAA!!! Number 1 star of the game, hands down. He was the only player that showed up to play and if it wasn't for him, the B's would've been down a significant number of goals after the first few minutes. Timmy who?
- I thought the defense played a very poor game, especially Chara. This is one of the worst games I've seen Chara play. He's a machine, so I'm sure he'll just shut down for 30 seconds, reboot and be back to normal...not very worried. Dougie was easily the best out of the bunch last night. Maybe he can...ready... teach 'em how to play defense!! See what I did there...
- Claude Julien looked like a hockey Albert Einstein last night (minus the hair). The offense struggled mightily all night, so coming out of the 2nd intermission he flips Seguin and Horton and the first line scores two goals right out of the gate. Well played, Mr. Julien, well played.
- While they didn't get much playing time, I thought the rookie line (MacDermaid - Tardiff - Spooner) played pretty well. Basically, they didn't f-- up, which is impressive considering the type of game and the environment they were playing in.
- I hate Subban's flopping ways, but man does that guy have a rocket of a shot. Grrr why can't he just suck so I can trash on him some more?? And, after typing this I'll have to go throw up, Carey Price had a good game too. That's all the praise a Canadiens team can get right now without my B's card being revoked.
- And lastly, the power play BLOWS. What is going on here?!? I've tried to be patient, but this is just embarrassing. It has to be all mental. The players on the ice are very good players on a very good team and yet when they have an extra man on the ice they all fart in their brains. I'm not talking SBDs, I'm talking loud clear the room farts in the brains. I still feel if they can get a few in, they'll get on a roll and make it a dangerous part of their game. They are just too damn good.

Golden Points: Montreal Canadiens
Bruins 4 - Montreal 3 SO
I've said it many times. When these two teams meet, it doesn't matter where they are in the standings, it's going to be a hard fought game. And that it was. At least I'm right on one thing...
Overall you have to be pleased with the result. Going into Montreal's house is never easy and even more so when you have a game the night before. I was getting pretty nervous in that third period. You wonder if the B's legs would just give out. Even though it wasn't pretty at times, the B's were able to pull it off. Capped off by a sneaky shot from Seguin. You can't blame Price for not moving. The book on Seguin reads he dekes more than Charlie Conway, so a goaltender shouldn't bite on his first move...unless that first move is a snap shot in the BACK OF THE NET... BOOYEA!
Now I'm only moderately to fully biased towards the Dude, but I thought McQuaid had a monster game. During the early stages of the game, I thought the B's were lacking in the physicality department. Not the Dude. He see red he hit red. It's always a good night when the Dude gets into a fight and this one was a very entertaining one. I give the nod to McQuaid, but give White credit for sticking in there, he took some SHOTS to the dome. Even Chicken Little in between the glass for NBCSN called McQuaid "underrated". Yes... I had to rewind the game just to make sure I heard that correctly. BOOM!
I'd like to give a shout out to Hal Gill. Although you received the "Wideman"-treatment from me while you played here, you provided a perfect screen in front of your own goaltender that allowed Ference to score. The only disappointment here was that Ference didn't flip off the crowd...
The B's next two goals were some of the prettiest all year. Pepe Le Pouliot only has 9 goals, but the one against Florida and now the one he scored last night have been two of the better goals all year. That's got to feel good to scored against your old team. For Bergie's power play goal, I'm still not sure how the heck he roofed that shot. He had nearly no angle and with just a flick of the wrist sent the puck nearly 90 degrees upwards over Price. Redic
There will always been questionable calls in a game, the refs are somewhat human and will make mistakes. I don't know if it was a memo from the league or what, but the four goaltender interference was a bit much. I'd probably prefer none of those to be called. Three of them shouldn't have been called, and the one called Cole for goaltender interference is iffy. Even though Thomas was in the crease, it wouldn't have disappointed me if they let that one go too.
I'm so disappointed in the Canadien's fans. You can boo Chara every time he touches the puck, you can boo the black and gold anytime anywhere, you can boo me. But you showed how classless you guys are, which we all already knew when you booed the National Anthem. You don't stand up and cheer when someone gets hurt, no matter who it is. Chara takes a puck to the chin, is lying on the ice bleeding and you stand up and cheer!!! I would love to see the owner make a comment condemning that sort of behavior. But that's the Habs organization for you...
Off to see some old friends, Blake Wheeler and Mark Stuart, out in Winnipeg Friday night.

8 Golden Points: Game 9 vs Canadiens
Canadiens 2 - Bruins 1
8 Golden Points:
1. This is getting pathetic. You see the Bruins "scored" one goal in the box score. That's false. The Canadiens scored on themselves. Although I will always take it, you have to realize the Bruins CAN'T FRIGGIN' SCORE. Story of the franchise for the past few years. And don't give me this Ryder bullshit. Ryder sucked and would not be helping this team right now. We have players who can score. Get your head out of your tooshies and put the puck in the net!!!
2. Subban finally dropped the gloves with someone. Although I was hoping for Horton, I wasn't pissed that it was Marchy. Took three times before the refs allowed this fight to occur. Marchy is smaller than Subban and got man handled at one point, but he got in a few shots. Big props to the Gnat for doing something EVERYONE in Boston wants to do.
3. Thomas again and again makes unbelievable saves. You would think after a while I'd get use to it. I haven't yet and I don't think I will. His break away save on Cammalleri was just beautiful and had me jumping all over the apartment (sorry downstairs neighbor). The B's were winning 1-0 at that point, making that save even more important. Now let's try and get the players in front of him playing better.
4. Star Wars Part XIII: The Return of Darth Quaider. I will kindly disagree with most people's analysis of McQuaid's game. I thought on the whole he played well. He was manning the point really well, getting low shots through the net or just wide of the net. Yeah, he was a minus 2. He made one mistake that led to a goal. But I wouldn't say he struggled. I'd say the whole team struggled.
5. How many opportunities is Peverley going to miss?? This is his second or third break away this season where I literally had no faith the puck would even come close to going in. I mean if the Habs decided to pull the goalie, he definitely would've scored, but unfortunately there was a goalie there.
6. We brought Horton in here to score. He had a GOLDEN opportunity tie the game and whiffed. Horty, you're a goal scorer last I checked. If you are wide open 5 feet in front of the net, you're suppose to score. Just a friendly reminder.
7. Exit Wideman. Exit Ryder. Enter Pouliot. From the beginning he had an uphill battle winning me over. I know I made it rain gross man turds on him previously, but I would've reversed my tone had he showed me anything. And I mean anything. He has done NOTHING. I would rather Caron in the lineup doing nothing than Pouliot in the lineup doing nothing. At least Caron is gaining NHL experience. Pouliot sucks. Trade him.
8. The defending Stanley Cup champions sit in last place. That's right, the stinking Jets are ahead of us. The Islanders are ahead of us. This team needs to wake up really quick or it's going to be a long season. All those fans they gained last year will go bye bye. Not like I'll care about that part. It'll just be easier for me to get tickets. This will just be a very negative blog. Maybe change the name to Copper Spokes... ZING!

The Evil Empire
Tonight we get our first taste of one of the best rivalries in all of sports. No, I ain't talking about the Yanks. I'm talking about the Habs. B's vs Habs have made the Sox vs Yanks rivalry look like a tickle fight between two school girls the last few years. Yeah, I hate A-Rod, but even Yankee fans do. Public enemy number one? PK Subban (when are we going to see a Subban vs Horton fight already!?). I would LOVE to see Chara throw Gill around like he did when Gill brought shame to the B. But I think PJ Axelsson could take Gill in a fight. And what a loser Pouliot... oh wait. He's on our side now.
It doesn't get much better than a good hockey rivalry especially with two teams that have as much history together and seem to literally HATE each other. It probably makes it better because you can actually fight the other team (within the rules...sometimes) in hockey. And boy do these two teams do a lot of fightin'.
Not to mention the two teams have been pretty good the past few years. That's what made this Stanley Cup win even more sweet. It went through Montreal first. Yeah, winning it going through Florida then Atlanta would've been nice too. But we had an epic battle against Montreal then mopped the floor with the Flyers. The two teams I hate the most!!
It's not uncommon that I spend a few hours just watching some of the classic Bruins/Habs moments. If you know me, I tend to find the brawls the most appetizing and there has NOT been a shortage of those the past few years. I could watch last year's brawl on repeat for days on end.
The Bruins are struggling to play their game consistently on a night in and night out basis. Last year they thrived off playing emotional and that emotion has been lacking to put it nicely. Montreal is in a similar situation. They have stunk up the joint so far, going 2-5-2 to start the season. They just fired their assistant coach and are looking to get back on track. They did play Philadelphia last night, so hopefully we can catch them a little flat/tired. I don't count on that though. With the way these two teams play, it's going to be just like camping... intense!
With both teams struggling, I predict a very entertaining home at home mini series here. Both teams need to prove to the league they are better than their records and need to prove to their fans that they are ready to step it up.
